How Faulconer digitized HR with Trimble’s HR management solutions
As a leading civil and infrastructure contractor headquartered in central Virginia, Faulconer is the go-to company for complex projects. Each year, its teams handle 30 to 40 intensive site development and highway projects.
Yet for all of its advancements and accolades, Faulconer still faced one big problem.
Its HR team was stuck under mountains of paper.
THE CHALLENGE
Outdated systems keep HR bogged down by paper
Despite ongoing modernization efforts across the construction industry, paper-based processes continue to bog down teams — and Faulconer Construction was no different. The company was “totally paper based when it came to HR,” as HR Manager Sharon Burleson puts it.
“We had prospective employees come to one of our two offices to fill out an application,” she explains. “An admin had to fill it out. Then when they were hired—which we also had to manage manually—they'd come in again and fill out very similar paperwork. The admin filled that out, too. They'd sit in a conference room and watch a video for safety and try to guess at their benefits enrollment."
It all added up to one very slow, and very cumbersome, process. Most of the HR team’s time went to re-typing paperwork instead of focusing on strategic initiatives to grow the business.
"We weren't really contributing to the company in a strategic way," Burleson says.
Clearly, it was time for a change.
THE SOLUTION
Trimble’s cloud-based platform comes to the rescue
Turns out, Faulconer already had the solution at their fingertips. They just needed to set it in motion.
Because the company was already using Trimble’s fully integrated ERP solution, they had access to all kinds of features for job costing, financial management, jobsite tracking, and so much more—including simple digital HR workflows.
So Burleson connected with the company’s IT director, Stephen Gagnon, to overhaul Faulconer’s HR processes, starting with onboarding. They made it easy for new hires to provide information from their laptops and mobile devices, and provided self-serve access to key information on benefits.
Things changed quickly after that.
THE RESULT
Faster onboarding and better communication—plus hours saved each week
Going digital seemed intimidating at first. But that all went away after a few days with the all-in-one construction business software. Within weeks, the entire company was experiencing the benefits.
Streamlined onboarding
With everything accessible in one central location, onboarding is completed in record time. The process is so smooth that new hires often comment on how much the company cares about their well-being and benefits.
Seamless communication
HR can easily communicate with all employees, rather than just those using company devices, and quickly get relevant information to specific jobsites and managers.
More effective training
Foremen can automatically record required training attendance, without the need for paper sign-in lists or manual data entry—taking safety and compliance to a new level of ease.
LOOKING AHEAD
What does the future hold for Faulconer?
The company has already added two more HR team members—not because they need more hands for typing, but because they’re ready to tackle more strategic initiatives.
“We're taking on strategic projects like improving benefits, building better training, and improving safety,” says Burleson. "By stripping away the mundane, clerical parts of HR with a modern HRIS system that's built for contractors, our HR team has proven how much more effective and strategic we can be. We're making everyone's jobs easier. And we're genuinely helping employees, rather than pushing papers."
